Prime Minister Ralph Gonsalves and Foreign Minister Sir Louis Straker met with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The two delegations discussed areas of cooperation, including Iran's pledge of support for the Argyle International Airport, which was reiterated by President Ahmadinejad. President Ahmadinejad thanked the Government of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines for their willingness to establish diplomatic relations in the face of limited criticism, and invited Prime Minister Gonsalves to visit Iran to see the country for himself and to hammer out additional areas of partnership and cooperation. Prime Minister Gonsalves also took the opportunity to urge moderation and active diplomacy in the rhetoric and communications between the United States and Iran. He also raised the issue of members of the Ba'hai faith, who have complained of discriminatory treatment in Iran. Prime Minister Gonsalves stated that SVG is a secular society that respects the freedom of religion and basic human rights of all peoples, and offered to share his country's experiences in that regard. President Ahmadinejad assured the Prime Minister that the Ba'hai practice their faith freely in Iran, and pledged to provide information outlining Iran's perspective on the matter. |
