Ambassador Gonsalves Welcomes Working Group on Financial and Economic Crisis

UNITED NATIONS, NEW YORK, July 31, 2009: -- Ambassador Camillo Gonsalves of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines whose role as co-facilitator of the United Nations Conference on the Global Financial and Economic Crisis and its Impact on Development was widely praised, has called on the General Assembly to urgently follow-up on the issues arising from the Conference.

Ambassador Gonsalves made the call at at UN General Assembly meeting which established an ad hoc working group to follow up on issues included in the outcome document that was negotiated during the conference. The working group was a key element of the Conference on the crisis, which was co-facilitated by Ambassador Gonsalves. All states supported the establishment of the working group, but some suggested that its substantive work should be delayed until a number of procedural matters were agreed.

However, Ambassador Gonsalves said the urgency of the crisis called for the work to start as soon as possible. The crisis was only just beginning in the developing world, as opposed to some larger countries, where it was coming to an end. He argued that the contours, mandate and scope of the working group were well-delineated in the consensus outcome document, and there was no need for a procedural dance on those issues.
